Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone :) As I sit on the couch drinking my coffee and watching the parade, I thought I'd get a nice little post in! I'll start with giving thanks to you all for reading my blog, and following me on this fun entrepreneurship adventure. It's been great, and I'm so thankful for all the support and encouragement I get from reading your comments :)

I wanted to share some new items with you and some of my holiday finds...

made this container from a coffee can - love it for paint brushes and other misc. items

New picture frame

this is my centerpiece right now, very make-shift and I like it!

These are going to be our stockings this Christmas - a great find from the Christmas Tree Shop - they are very old-school Abercrombie looking to me!

I'm going to take out all my silver and fill it with this pine cone mixture and maybe some ornaments - I think it's pretty!

Happy Thanksgiving, ya'll!

A Cottage Christmas

I am sooo getting into the Christmas spirit, and I've just started changing around my apartment by doing the unthinkable - replacing the seashells and with reds, silvers, oranges, and candy canes - Eek! It's my first Christmas living in this apartment with Brian and I'm so excited :) In looking for some inspiration, I came accross these photos and wanted to share them with my readers!

I love all of this!! It's festive, yet elegant and in a way, understated. I love that beauty.

I wanted to share some of my decorations so far, BUT my camera battery died and my charger is in my office, typical right? I'll get those up this week!

Oh, we went on this awesome hike this weekend at Bear Mountain, NY - thought I'd share a few photos of that!

Some Good Local Finds

One of my favorite things to do is shop on the tightest budget imaginable for home decor. That might sound weird to you, but there are few things as satisfying to me as when someone walks into my apartment and asks, "where did you find that??", and best is their response when I tell them where I actually get it, "a tag sale, goodwill, michaels, marshalls, homegoods, etc...

I've found some goodies over the past few days which I normally find running out on my lunch break:

I found this at Michaels on sale for under $50.00

Are these purple glasses with etched gold flowers not to die for? Do you see the price??

Found both of these at a local thrift shop, on sale on Etsy :) I found out they were depression glass, cool!

Chinese Vase from the same local thrift shop, also on Etsy!

And that's about it, but loving this week's finds! God I love shopping :)

You Live You Learn

I thought of the name Shorely Chic on 7/29/09 and I only remember this because that’s when I purchased the domain name from godaddy.com.  I think it was in late August that I put my first item on Etsy.com. I started this blog in September, and a few weeks later I started tweeting J. I had my first show two weeks ago, and have done a few more since.

I wanted to write this post to reflect on the past few months and think about all I have learned since Shorely Chic started. I felt like it was time to get back in touch with my goals and big picture plans. Too often, we get so mixed up with the present, and every now and then, we have to slow down, sit back with a pen in hand and a nice cup of tea, and think…

On that day, I knew little to nothing about:

a.     running a small business
b.     retail (on the buying side, I knew plenty!)
c.     marketing
d.     the power of social media
e.     photography
f.      shipping
g.     budgeting
h.     time management
i.      customer service!

I did however know about art and architecture from my Art History major in college and studies abroad in Florence, Italy. I also like to believe I have “an eye” for interior design, and I think that is something you either have or you don’t.

I’ve also spent some significant time in professional world, which has helped a lot in this venture. To give you a little history I started working as an intern at Christie’s Auction House in NYC and later at a very trendy PR/Event-planning firm.  After college, I began working in recruiting at a large law firm in NYC, then the Council on Foreign Relations, and since my move back to Connecticut, I am now working at an oil company - Woosh!

NOW on what I have learned from Shorely…

I have just started to dabble in learning letters a.-i. (above) and can’t wait to learn more! I have learned to appreciate my DAY JOB tremendously for teaching me more and more about working in business, giving me health insurance, and most importantly, a consistent income! I have learned the importance of a good critique from fellow Etsians. I have learned so much about crafting – painting – stapling – fabrics – patterns – and so much more. I have learned how invaluable the support of my loving family, friends, and boyfriend is in all this, and I love them so much for it!

Right now, I am at the stage of making small crafts like picture frames, pillows, candles, vases, some tabletop pieces, wine sacs, and other random home goodies. These sell, but not all that frequently yet. The pillows were a huge hit so I’d like to make more and more of those, and maybe some more interior items like furniture and art and mirrors. See the thing is, I am only on Etsy as of now where everything has to be handmade or vintage, which is actually perfect for me just starting out and learning my craft. However, eventually I am going to have to be able to use my ‘eye’ and pick out pieces I’d like to share with my customers through Shorely Chic, but made from other crafters and artists. I think my vision and style will best be shared with my customers this way – well more efficiently at least.

There is sooo much more I could write but I realize this is dragging, so I’ll end with my big picture goal:

I want to own one Shorely Chic Home Décor shop, maybe more, on an adorable little street with other shops and cafes, all mom and pop type places, right on the beach in some charming New England town like Rowayton or Fairfield, and have home items for sale, and interior decorating services offered by yours truly J  How perfect does that sound??

Shorely Chic Holiday Fairs and Parties

Woohoo, What-A-Weekend! I could not move on Sunday night after my events on Saturday, a holiday fair at a church from 9-3, and a jewelry and home decor party from 5-12:30 a.m. Don't get me wrong, it was such great fun and again I learned so much, but it was indeed exhausting!
I participated in these events with my bff Cheryl Caveny, the designer and owner of KulaKai  (on the web) and on Etsy, KulaKai. I absolutely LOVE her stuff as we pretty much have the same exact taste, and it is so great to share the pursuit of our separate creative passions together :)
Since we were 10, we dreamed of opening our own boutique on the beach and we were going to call it CACELO (khak-i-lo) for Cheryl Ann Caveny Elizabeth Louise Orgera. Check out her website to see all her great designs and stay tuned for a KulaKai giveaway coming later this week!!
Here are some pics of the weekend --

This was us at the Holiday Fair in Greenwich which was VERY different than what we had expected - basically it was just much smaller and there were more baked goods for sale than crafts, but we stayed and had a blast together eating all the cookies and laughing our hearts out.

Here was our table at the party, we mixed all of our stuff and scattered it throughout the house :) We had a great time - the host is one of Cheryl's older sisters best friends, and I played tennis with her in high school, so we pretty much knew all the guests.

New wine sacks - just listed on Etsy, too.

So there you have it! Our Shorely Chic/KulaKai weekend. Cher just moved to Newport Beach, CA so I don't get to see her as much but that just means I have a great vacation to take at any time ;)

Happy Monday and Have a Great Week!!
