A Snowy New Years Eve Morning

I took the day off and it was so perfect to wake up to the snow falling outside the window. Brian and I woke up, went to my parent's house to feed the dog (we're house-sitting) and went to our favorite diner before heading to Philly to ring in the New Year! Had to get a blog in the middle, though! I was loving my camera this morning so I decided to take some photos of my doggie, my favorite diner, and my home :)

this is the view from our little porch/balcony this morning

here is Casey, my parent's 14 yr-old beagle that we're taking care of

she has such a crush on Brian, follows him everywhere :) she likes him more than me which is kind of sad because I'm her sister!

me sans any makeup at our favorite diner. I don't think I even washed my face - excuse the poor display!

I like this diner so much because this is the view and all the tables are against the window

Here is our street - love it.

I've been meaning to show you all my wreath - I'm very proud of it! Thanks for making it, Mom :)

Our dining room

It's still very much a work in progress, adding things slowly but "shorely" hehe

the french door is my favorite part of the apartment

living room, not magazine quality by any means but it works!

living room 2

this butler's pantry is my other favorite part of the apartment

my first painting from high school - i kind of like this one

this is in Rowayton, my favorite section of town on the water, of course!

So there you have it! You met my doggie, my favorite diner, and saw my not-so-perfect, but I think lovely little apartment.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Christmas Recap and New Finds!

I hope you all had a happy, relaxing, and peaceful holiday this year. Amidst all of the craziness that is Christmas (40 people on Christmas Eve at my parents’ house!), I love those little moments when you block out the noise and commotion and look at the smiles on your loved ones faces and realize how lucky you are to have so much love and joy surrounding you. It goes by so fast doesn’t it?? All the excitement and holiday cheer, and then poof! It’s over… At least we have New Years and a few days off to look forward to!

Brian got me a beautiful gold starfish necklace with little diamonds on it for Christmas, I nearly cried when I saw it, so pretty. He said he got it for me because he was so proud of all I have done with starting Shorely Chic – he is the best. I got him a J.Crew peacoat in navy, he loved it!

Once Christmas was over, I took the day on Saturday to shop and decided not to go with the crowds, but rather at thrift stores and consignment shops where there were no lines! I found so many adorable items, mostly glassware and a few other antique pieces. I have been working on getting them all photographed for my Etsy shop. I use a Canon Powershot, which has been great so far but I think I’m going to invest in one of those big old cameras with the long lenses soon, they look so cool!

Here are some photos of my new finds:

Have a great night!

Isola Bella and Delicious Dinny!

Hey guys! My friend Gina at Isola Bella Shop featured me in her blog today! She is based out of the gorgeous Virgin Islands and is incredibly talented. I am in love with all her hand-made items and I am pretty confident if you like the beach you will too! Be sure to check her post .

So after work today I went to the mall to finish my Christmas shopping and didn't get home until about 7:30. Normally, Brian would whip something up or I would pick up something like soup from the market, but I have been wanting to learn how to make simple dinners so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

I made this really simple dinner with stuff I had around the house which I never seem able to do. There are some things I believe you need to always have on hand like dry pasta, olive oil, fresh garlic, spices, and frozen meats and veggies.  These are a must in our house.

First, I boiled water with salt in a large pot for the pasta.
Second, I sautéed the garlic in olive oil.
Third, threw frozen spinach into the olive oil and added sea salt.
Added the pasta to the boiling water
Added the cooked pasta (al dente always) to a bowl and poured the spinach mixture on top with extra oil added at then end.
Mixed it all together and topped with Feta cheese and crushed red pepper.

It was so so good!!! Try it :)

Nighty and Happy Holidays!

A Great Week in Review

So it was a great week for Shorely Chic that ended with a huge snow storm leaving me snowed in with family on Saturday night. We baked cookies, listened to christmas carols, and fell asleep stuffed after a good meal and too many cookies!

I found a new thrift store in town and got some great items which have all been posted on Etsy:

Chic Turquoise Mirror

Pink Champagne Glasses to ring in the new year!

Florentine Wastebasket

Lime Green Asian Vase

Cute Aqua Pitcher

On another note, in my last post I was talking about how excited I was to sell an item to a "local". We had agreed she would come to my apartment to pick up the item because it made no sense to use shipping. Well, little did I know that I was selling my bamboo mirror to a women who held a senior editing position at the late Domino magazine - umm so exciting! It was such an awesome feeling to have someone who clearly knows about good design pick me out of the bunch! One thing I am so happy to have learned from her is about the brand new online magazine LONNY started from former Domino members, short for London New York.

p.s. the cover girl was my customer!

definitely check out LONNY and let me know what you think - I'm pretty sure if you liked Domino, you'll be hooked!

Have a great week and good luck getting ready for the holiday!!

Julie and Julia and Me

Have you seen Julie & Julia? I'm actually watching it now and can I say how much I love this movie? I feel like I am Julie and Julia here in my little apartment in Darien, CT chasing after my dream to be a home decor maker/interior decorator - Shorely Chic! I must admit, I haven't felt so inspired to write lately being so busy with the holidays and such, but I think seeing this has cured me! It's really cool to write down your thoughts and feelings, and have people you don't even know read them! It's like being a published writer with little to no credentials required!

Last night, I sold a bamboo mirror to a woman who lives in Rowayton, a little beach town right next door (the town where I dream of opening my boutique). Anyway, I'm excited, she ordered it off Etsy and is coming to pick it up on Friday, since shipping would be a waste. I think it will be really neat to sell a piece to a local, you know, someone not from a craft fair or friend of a friend :) I hope she likes my apartment, and the mirror!

I'm still watching the movie, and writing in between... Meryl Streep does an amazing job in this movie! Julie's husband is so cute, too, how he supports and encourages her madness, kind of like Brian :)

I'm going to finish the movie now, then hit the sheets, I just wanted to get something written and boy does it feel good!

miss you :) Liz

More soon...

Woosh - Time to Slow Down...

Hey Everyone! December has been extremely busy and I can't tell you how good it feels to be sitting on the couch with our christmas tree lit and decorated, and HGTV on our new 46" flat screen!! The tv was an early Christmas gift from Brian's family, and boy are we enjoying it! I've never been much of a tv person, mainly because I always feel like I should be doing something more productive, but I think I might be a changed person, and that's a good thing :)

It's been a little while since I've had a chance to sit down and write -- we had our Shorely Chic Holiday Party at my mom's house on Thursday night which was great. We weren't sure if Shorely Chic was ready for a launch party, so we called it a preview party where people could come after work :) We served bellini cocktails and hor d'eurves and decorated the house with Shorely Chic.

Me and Mom in the kitchen getting ready!

our new Shorely Chic bookcase filled with vintage goodies!

So Fun!
It was so nice of everyone to come by our home and preview Shorely Chic! Lots of people got holiday shopping done, too!

So with the party over and Brian traveling for a majority of December (booo) it's time for this girl to slow down, focus on gift-buying, my Etsy shop, and blogging of course!

Good night, everyone :)

House Beautiful - Meant to Be!

Do you ever feel like you could be one of those people hosting the decorating shows on HGTV or writing articles for BH&G or House Beautiful? I do! I would certainly need some good make-up and new clothes, and maybe a little polishing up on the writing skills, but with a little TLC - I think I could do it!

Over the weekend as I was the December issue of HB, I spotted my turquoise ikat pillow on one of their beds! Well, let me be clear, it wasn't MY pillow, but the same fabric! I was obviously thrilled that the fabric I chose out of the thousands at Mood, was also one the designers at HB chose :) We just have so much in common! Here is the pillow and I will post the picture from the mag as soon as I get my hands on it.

House Beautiful tweeted today about the top 10 design books in their opinion and I got a little chuckle because I did the same post on Saturday. Their books may be a little more sophisticated than my, "Thrifty Decor", and, "Shoestring Chic", but come on - same post within a day of each other? Meant to be...

I'm just kidding (kind of)

I did want to pass along this awesome article from the editors at House Beautiful as a follow-up to Saturday's post on books:

BRINGING PARIS HOME BY PENNY DRUE BAIRD

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Triple crème.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "Avoid trendy faux finishes, which become outdated quickly. Stick with the classics...strié, simple glazed walls, and stucco will always be in good taste."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: "In a library with dark wood paneling, one might opt for a rich jewel-toned mantel such as forest green or oxblood."
WHO'LL LIKE IT: Francophiles who have a passion for dressier decorative styles: Baroque, Rococo, Régence, and Empire.
WHO WON'T: Those who would rather bring home chic, contemporary Paris, or who don't have vast rooms with very high ceilings for all the chandeliers, columns, pilasters, carved mantels, and boiserie.

DEFINING LUXURY BY JEFFREY BILHUBER

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Distinctly American.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "Decorating is an investment in living, not necessarily in furnishings."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: "The porcelain light socket, for example, is one of the most beautiful objects ever made — a perfect design, one that requires no improvement."
WHO'LL LIKE IT: Anyone who likes to study and fantasize about beautiful rooms with a glass of red wine in hand.
WHO WON'T: Anyone looking for 1-2-3 step-by-step decorating.

THE NEW TRADITIONAL BY DARRYL CARTER WITH TRISH DONNALLY

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Clean, calm, cerebral.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "You can make the most traditional chair modern if you cover it in a neutral linen."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: "An antique wool grain sack worn to softness serves as a throw."
WHO'LL LIKE IT: Pensive people who dream about living in muted, understated rooms.
WHO WON'T: Spontaneous people who like a lot of pattern and a lot of stuff.

YOUR HOME, YOUR SANCTUARY BY CLODAGH WITH HEATHER RAMSDELL

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Urban Zen; natural and rejuvenating.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "The door should open with a smooth turn of the key. If your lock does not open easily, get it fixed right away. Cranky locks create cranky people."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: "Bring generous, blanket-size towels with you for nomadic sex on your sofa."
WHO'LL LIKE IT: Loft-living urbanites who yearn for long walks on the beach.
WHO WON'T: Traditionalists, lovers of chintz, and chrome-and-glass purists who believe home should be a "machine for living."

BARRY DIXON INTERIORS BY BRIAN D. COLEMAN

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Southern renaissance.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "Don't be afraid to downplay a serious antique with an amusing accent to keep it from becoming too formal and unapproachable."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: "Entering the dining room is like swimming down into a Sargasso Sea."
WHO'LL LIKE IT: Anyone who appreciates bold juxtapositions.
WHO WON'T: The modernist.

THOM FILICIA: STYLE BY THOM FILICIA

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: You can do it!
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "Great design can be had at every price point."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: More than once suggests jettisoning sofa for chaise longues.
WHO'LL LIKE IT: Your artistic sister-in-law.
WHO WON'T: Minimalists and anyone afraid of color.

TO YOUR TASTE BY CELERIE KEMBLE

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Decorating for Bright Young Things.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "I warn people to open their mail-order catalogs knowing that in two years' time, much of what is shown will be ubiquitous."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: "Bright or primary-colored rooms go a long way when housing toys, which tend to be of the same colors."
WHO'LL LIKE IT: The young and the fashionable looking to create traditional interiors with a kick.
WHO WON'T: Anyone scared of animals real or faux, or who doesn't like to read (there are lots of photos and also lots of text, though it's exceptionally practical).

MLINARIC ON DECORATING BY MIRABEL CECIL & DAVID MLINARIC

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Impeccable.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: Too discreet to give advice. But you might be inspired by lampshades made of local survey maps or curtains made out of the material used for nun's veils.
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: Some may roll their eyes at having damask specially woven to a 21-inch width for historical accuracy. But forget finding fault. Mlinaric is a master who doesn't put a dado wrong.
WHO'LL LIKE IT: Anglophiles, Rothschilds (half their houses are here), historic-house aficionados, and those who swoon at the thought of rush matting on scrubbed wood floors.
WHO WON'T: Anyone looking for "tips" or a feeling for how Mlinaric actually thinks. We hear his voice only a handful of times. The text describes the rooms in the detached dulcet tones of a museum audio-guide.

HOUSES BY MICHAEL S. SMITH WITH CHRISTINE PITTEL

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Brideshead via Bel Air.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "To get to the essence of what you really want, you have to dig through a lot of layers of what you feel is expected or prestigious or impressive. You have to work to find it."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: "An amazing property, but clearly we had to rethink the house. I said, 'Let's go to the Veneto and look at houses by Palladio.'"
WHO'LL LIKE IT: Anyone who adores antiques, English country houses, and the best of the best.
WHO WON'T: Anyone who enjoys seeing a room made over for $250 in 24 hours on HGTV.

HOUSES IN MY HEART BY CARLETON VARNEY

STYLE IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS: Color, Color, Color, Color, Color.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: "Every home needs a touch of yesterday and today — and room for tomorrow, because a house is never finished."
GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY: "I do not believe there is good taste or bad taste — only taste."
WHO'LL LIKE IT: People who can't get enough pattern and color. Decorating "voyeurs" who love the stories behind the rooms. P.S. The book design itself is dazzling.
WHO WON'T: Beige types.
I can't wait to take these out from the lib and get inspired!

On another note, Brian and I went to chop down our tree over the weekend and it was so much fun! A friend of his at work lives on a tree farm in this little charming town in Connecticut, Easton, which was like a sanctuary for us, a piece of true country only a few miles away. Jim was really sweet and opened up the farm just for us and took us out on his truck with his cute little doggie and drove us into tree heaven!

I couldn't resist the baby tree, isn't it adorable :)
